Used Cell Phones Tell Tales

Posted in Hardware, Electronics by Sane on October 18th, 2006

Buying a used cell phone from an internet site like Ebay or perhaps from a garage sale can get you more then you bargained for.  The new concept in cell phones, much like personal computers that are sold, is the erasing of personal information from the phone.  Well the strides that are being made in this area are falling short to say the least and some of the companies are getting the suits slapped on them for the fall out.  There is nothing more dangerous than having your personal information privy to a complete stranger and the many used cell phones that are being sold are telling all to whoever wants to hear it.

The problem is that the systems in place to erase all information off of a cell phone when it changes hands are shoddy at best.  They erase the data from normal view, like attempting to pull up a text message that was deleted, but they do not erase it for the skilled persons out there that have the right software program.  That is where the problem comes in.  Cell phones work much like a computer, with a chip that stores all the information that is saved on the phone to be recalled later.  Well the erasing of that chips sounds simple enough, normally removing it from the power source for a pre-determined amount of time.  The owner of the phone is satisfied that the information is gone forever.

The Cat’s Meow

Posted in Technology, Internet by Sane on October 18th, 2006

Scientists are always on the lookout for a way to better understand the world and the creatures that live in it.  No matter which way you turn there is always the time when someone is trying to figure out one of the many unknowns that this world has to offer.  At this point the study of animals is the way in which we learn about nature.  For centuries the world of science has been in awe of the way in which a mammal can be so much more in tune with the world then humans are.  Animals can easily predict weather and forecast the lurking danger, things that humans are behind the times with to be sure.  But new research is set to give us a better look at how the animals view the world.

A group of U.S. based scientists have developed whiskers that will tell us more about how the animals who have whiskers use them and then in turn use the information they gain from them.  Dubbed “robotic whiskers” these instruments are meant to give the researchers a better idea of the information that is transmitted to the animals brain by way of the whiskers.  This is a cutting edge experiment that has been years in the making.

At this point the researchers are focusing their attention on the rat community.  Through this method they hope to move forward to other species that rely heavily on their whiskers.  Rats are known to be some of the most amazing animals in the world with their ability to squeeze into tiny places and find their way in the dark.  This project looks to find out what role the whiskers play in the life of a rat and how they help it too survive the world.

Nintendo Wii Ready to Rumble

Posted in Technology, Hardware, Electronics by Sane on October 17th, 2006

2005 was a bit of a disappointment to many fans of stand alone video game consoles.  The expected release of the Sony platform Playstation 3 was cancelled, Nintendo was not even in the running and the Xbox 360 was tainted with a whole host of problems, from supply not meeting demand to the system not performing due to glitches.  This year looks to be the exact opposite.  With Microsoft moving forward with their personal music division and leaving the 360 to hold its own, there are only two major competitors in the market for the 2006 holiday season, Sony and Nintendo, both of whom will release their new systems within days of each other.

The second week of November will see the much anticipated release of the Sony Playstation 3 game console after many delays.  The company is confident that they have skirted all the possible problems that came with the 360 and plan to ship about one million of the new platforms by the end of the year.  Pre orders are being taken through most retailers but the supply will most likely dry up before the holidays arrive.  The secondary market will boom with this release as prices are expected to skyrocket within a week of the release.  The same concept held true for the 360 that was selling through many internet sites for as much as two thousand dollars.

MySpace.com no Longer The Teenage Wasteland

Posted in Technology, Internet by Sane on October 17th, 2006

Long thought of as nothing more then a playground for teens looking to hook up with the next hot thing, MySpace.com is looking to change its image and is doing so by attracting the more mature audience.  This comes on the heals of some bad press received by the site as many of the parents of teens that use the user generated world are concerned about safety.  Boasting over one hundred million users and growing, MySpace.com has become a hot commodity in recent years.  Started by two friends who saw the future of the web turning to the user generated content era, the company was sold some time later for over five hundred million dollars in one of the largest internet deals of the time.

Today MySpace.com is attracting those of all ages to the gates for reasons of any kind.  The recent trend in MySpace.com is the use of the huge database as an advertising tool.  Having over one hundred million people all in one place is a dream come true for internet marketers who are using the site as a big time promotional tool and looking for ways to get around the rules and regulations that are set in place.  The main purpose behind the site is too build a list of friends or a network as the site states. This is done by way of sending out requests to others in hopes of them adding you to their network.
