Seagate Announces 12GB Micro Hard Disk

Posted in Technology, Hardware by John T P on February 19th, 2006

Seagate has announced a new 1-inch 12GB hard disk that is substantially smaller and faster than its current top of the line 8GB model. The ST1.3 series 12GB disk is 23 percent smaller, has a 50 percent greater capacity, and consumes 30 percent less power than its predecessor. The disk is designed for use in mobile phones and portable media devices. The drive is the second Seagate model to use perpendicular recording, and the first to do so in the 1-inch category.

The drive’s small size of 40×30x5 mm allows for more streamlined media devices and is suited well for clamshell and candy bar style mobile phones. As part of its G-Force Protection system Seagate will also offer an optional drop sensor which will increase shock resistance 33 percent and help the drive survive a 1.5 meter or roughly five foot fall onto concrete or ceramic surfaces when properly mounted inside a device. In addition, Seagate’s RunOn technology will keep the track heads aligned when the device is in motion.

The ST1.3 begins shipping in the third quarter of this year.

Apple to launch low-cost laptop and iPod

Posted in Technology, Hardware by John T P on January 9th, 2006

APPLE, the US computing and consumer electronics giant, is to launch a low-cost laptop. Company founder and chief executive Steve Jobs hopes to be able to unveil the device this week in San Francisco along with a new low-cost iPod and some other surprises.

As revealed by The Business last year, Apple has been working to develop a low-cost laptop to encourage consumers using Apple iPod music players to buy its computers.

Despite recent legal attempts by Apple to silence US-based website ThinkSecret, which has been predicting the imminent launch of a cheap laptop, US analysts believe Apple plans to unveil a new laptop this week. Apple has taken ThinkSecret to court with allegations that recent postings on its site outlining planned Apple products revealed trade secrets.

Apple shocked the computer industry last year by announcing it was ditching its long-term loyalty to IBM PowerPC microchips in favour of Intel processors, which have traditionally powered rival PCs running Windows software produced by Apple’s rival, Microsoft.

US analysts believe a low-cost Apple laptop running on Intel processors would enable Apple to capitalise on the success of its range of iPod music players by tempting iPod owners to switch from Microsoft-based computers to Apple machines.

iPod Shuffle 1 GB to be discontinued?

Posted in Hardware by John T P on December 31st, 2005

According to TheStreet.com, Apple may well be on its way to update or phase out the 1 GB version of the iPod Shuffle if the availability of this model at the Apple online store and various Apple Stores is taken as an Indication.

Amazon.com simply says this model is “un-available”. Even on Apple’s online store, this model is out of stock since Mid-December.

According to a survey carried out at 12 Apple Stores, 7 of them didn’t know when exactly they will get new stocks of this popular digital music player.

Can this be taken as an indication that Apple will launch new iPod along with the Intel Macs at Mac World, San Francisco on Jan 10, 2006? Time will tell..
