coComment - 2006’s web 2.0 innovation

Posted in Technology, Internet by John T P on February 7th, 2006

Without doubt, the hottest thing EVERYWHERE now is CoComment. You’ve not yet heard of it, I’m surprised! Everybody and I mean everybody is enjoying CoComment and already it is being hailed as the biggest web 2.0 innovation of this year. Scobleizer, TechCrunch, BlogHerald, Problogger and half the other bloggers in Town are enjoying it and it’s striking Memeorandum, Blogniscent and many other tech news sites.

CoComment is owned and run by the Swiss Innovation Company - SwissCom Before I post, what’s hot about CoComment, let me just tell you how to register. CoComment is invite only, meaning only if someone gives you your 16-digit invite code, you can register. But the guys at CoComment unlike Google, seem to be very kind.

1) Goto CoComment.com
2) In the right hand side bottom menu, check out the option called Get Notified
3) Enter Your Email Address and Submit 4) Check your Email in 2 minutes, click on the invite and register.

Though the notified button says “You don’t have an invitation code? If you’d like to be notified when coComment is freely available, please give us your email address and we’ll let you know:“, the invite is sent instantly to you, so there is absolutely no need for the Beg, Borrow, Steal routine here. Anybody can register and after this, I seriously find no need for an invite. Back to CoComment itself.

What exactly is CoComment? It is a simple Web 2.0 Online tool made using Ajax (Duh!), PHP and some other languages. Now let me ask a question. Are you a person who follows more than 8 blogs and regularly comments on all the blogs you visit? Have you ever felt annoyed when you have to Load a post about 20 times to see whether another user has commented on it? Have you ever wanted your users to see the comments that you have made elsewhere? Do you want to keep track of all the places that you’ve commented recently but have no idea as to how?

coComment Main

Let me give you the answer in 1 Word: CoComment. This is what CoComment allows you to do. Starting with my own page as an example, check this out. This shows all the comments I’ve made recently in major blogs all over.

coComment Website

About the main coComment site itself, it has been designed in tune with all 2.0 sites giving a look similar to Flickr, not very catchy but still good enough. The right font, big text, and ofcourse a couple of flash images good enough for us.

All you have to do is simple, just register, and whatever browser you are using, click on the “coComment Bookmarklet” and keep it in the toolbar. Everytime you want to comment, type the comment in the textbox, click on the Small Button in the Toolbar and click submit. Some people whine that their time is wasted by clicking on the button but absolutely NOT! Due to simplicity and speed of AJAX, all it takes is a second (or even less), before your username appears next to the “Submit” button giving you authorization to post. After you post, you can check out your user profile to see all the comments that you’ve made. Next to it, a number shows the number of replies to the blog and if you click on the link, coComment automatically shows you the most recent comments to the post and gives you an immediate link to reply to the post or view other articles from the same blog.

Currently coComment supports 6 Major Blogging Platforms # Blogger/Blogspot # MSN Spaces # MySpaces # TypePad # Wordpress # Xanga

coComment Blogging Platforms

And from what the developers say, support is round the corner for Movable Type, Text Pattern, and maybe even LJ. But ofcourse you are a human, what if you forget to click on that little button. Simple you can still track the comment down. coComment has taken care of all our needs, all ya gotta do is select that comment you’ve already made and click on the button to add that to your list, simple yet innovative and extremely powerful coding. Is that all? Nope, there’s more. If you want to display on your blog the most recent comments, then coComment gives you the code to place in your blog which automatically displays your recent comments, so that people can get a quick view of the posts you’ve visited and the comments you’ve made. Even more innovative.

coComment Blog List

Still floating in the wave, coComment also has a list of the blogs where their users have posted recently, and also the users who have commented recently. And in Web 2.0 style, the active users and the blogs are bigger than the rest, we’ve all seen that in Wordpress and Digg, haven’t we? And the top commentors can be seen in the main page… Definitely cool enough for me.

Am I finished, phew! Definitely not. Thanks to Marc for pointing this out. People in the blogosphere are uber-fast and this is full proof of that. Solutionwatch has immediately come up with a terrific Greasemonkey script, which automates coCommenting. Yes, you don’t have to click on that Damn button anymore. All that you have to do is simply comment and that will be added to coComment, truly breathtaking. Thanks for making this and making our lives simpler. This script works with all the blogging platforms supported by cC and works by identifying comment forms in the page. To get this script, you have to install Greasemonkey (a Firefox extension). And ofcourse, the coComment guys have a Team Blog and a forum as well for support and ideas.

Currently coComment is the 6th hottest search term in Technorati. There even seems to be a Firefox extension but it doesn’t work for me. :( And we have reached the end of this article. So, what is your bottomline , you ask. The bottomline is all over the top. Yes, coComment without doubt is growing at a rate faster than what we have all thought and it’s rate of growth is faster than even Digg. 2006 is going to be the year of coComment and as coComment starts broadening it’s services providing more for Bloggers and non-bloggers and also support for CMS’s like Nucleus, Text Pattern, NMS’s and even forums, their useful-ness is going to reach an all-time high.

coComment is definitely the IN thing right now and better try it out before they close their service due to high demand.

Long Live coComment - from an ardent fan Source:: Chronotron

If you people use Firefox, get the amazing Greasemonkey script, you don’t have to click on that button at all.

And you don’t need an invite code, just give em your Email address.

Thanks for the comments. This post in my own blog gave me some good hits too!
