Google to launch PCs
Christmas is near and you can expect a cool gift from Santa (Google) this time. Google is planning to launch PCs for markets in India and China. According to the report by India’s leading newspaper, Hindustan Times, (Report not available online) Google will be launching the PCs with California based Wyse technology.
The PCs won’t have CPU; they will be bundled with Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor. The PC will connect to the hosted system on their server and the remote OS will manage storage and functioning of the PC. This will keep PC away from virus and also provide secure solution for storage of the user data.
The PC will run on software created by Google; hardware and other technicalities will be managed by Wyse technology.
The PCs will be available for Rs. 9,000 (INR) i.e. approximately $200
This opens door for much talked Google OS, GBrowser and Google’s office application.

Opps, I am really sorry for the typo in the URL, will fix it soon with 301 redirect in sometime
This press release may put some light on the issue..it does not mention the name google anywhere but it does mention about the thin client which is in the picture

Well I wouldnt be too sure abt this. If i have to store everything on Google’s sever, can i trust them with my private information such as paswords, credit card info, etc etc. especially when google has a name in scanning user data for promoting advertisements like they do in Gmail!
How safe can you keep your information? The safest place for your private info is always your own harddisk and not someone else’s.
Of course, thats what i think……..!

No CPU ? How’s that possible. Maybe it’s no HDD

Actually it will have small CPU chip which will just manage connection to the net I suppose because rest of the things including processing will be done remotely so it really can’t be called as CPU also…

How do you make the connection to Google? the release plainly says Wyse Technology is the company behind this.

Hi Rob,
I said that Wyse technology already released something like Thin client earlier and according to the article Google and Wyse Technology are behind Google’s thin client.
So it is highly possible that google might be using the same thing which Wyse announced a month back in the press release.

by CPU, the article must mean “case”. The keyboard or monitor will likely have a wireless or RJ45 slot on it, and boot something like pxes.

I cannot believe Google come up with that! A PC with no hard drive that can do nothing but access a server for $200? My P4 system w/ 40G HDD cost $200 after rebate 2 years ago. For $400 you can get a low end PC with monitor right now.

Won’t work…how does Google expect to manage network latency with such poor bandwidth in India. I mean, what if you have to save GBs of data. It would take forever…

But I wonder if google is gonna ask for anything to pay them again to save out files on their servers if thats the case. Or possibly even money just to connect to their server.

Deep, I’ll reserve my doubts about that, since Google’s PR team has officially denied(check the register’s story on my post) any possibility of Google PCs(for now I think). But as I noted, you can never be sure with Google!!
